Can Anyone Wear Indian Jewelry? Our Honest Take

Posted by Yamoona on

We get this question a lot, usually in a quiet DM: "I'm not Indian. Is it okay if I wear this?"

Short answer: yes. We'd love that. Here's the longer, more honest answer.

Jewelry has always traveled

Indian jewelry has been admired, traded, and worn around the world for centuries. Jhumkas, bangles, and silver work aren't locked behind a door. They're part of a living culture, and culture grows when people share it with care.

We built Yamoona for anyone and everyone. Our designs are timeless on purpose, so they can belong to you, whoever you are.

Appreciation vs. appropriation

The difference usually comes down to a few simple things.

  • Learn the name. Calling it a jhumka instead of "those Indian bell earrings" is a small act of respect.
  • Know if something is sacred. Some pieces carry religious or marital meaning, like the mangalsutra. It's thoughtful to understand that before wearing it.
  • Buy from the culture. Supporting Indian-owned brands and Indian artisans keeps the craft alive and puts money back into the communities that created it.
  • Wear it as you'd wear anything you love, not as a costume.

What about Indian folks who didn't grow up with this?

Maybe you're second or third generation and never learned the names. Maybe your family didn't wear traditional jewelry. Maybe you're figuring out your relationship with your culture on your own terms.

That's okay too. There's no test to pass. Wear the jhumkas to your 9 to 5. Pair a temple necklace with a slip dress. Your culture is yours to explore.

And for men and everyone else

Kadas, rings, and silver chains have been worn by men in India for generations. Jewelry has no gender here. Wear what makes you feel good.

Where to start if you're new

  • Earrings: small jhumkas or detailed studs are an easy entry point.
  • A kada or bangle: great for anyone, any outfit.
  • Oxidized silver: works with western clothes beautifully.
