Walk into any Indian jewelry store and someone will say, "Show me the chandbalis." And you'll nod like you know exactly what that means.
No judgment. Indian earrings have a whole vocabulary, and nobody hands you the dictionary. So here it is.
Jhumka
The icon. A jhumka is a bell or dome-shaped earring, usually hanging from a stud, often with tiny beads or pearls along the edge. When you move, it sways and sometimes chimes a little.
Wear it with: literally everything. Sarees, lehengas, kurtas, and honestly, a white tee and jeans. Small jhumkas are everyday-friendly, big ones are a statement.
We wrote a whole love letter to them here: What is a jhumka?
Chandbali
"Chand" means moon and "bali" means earring, so a chandbali is a crescent moon-shaped earring. They're often detailed with stones, pearls, or filigree, and they frame your face beautifully.
Wear it with: festive and wedding looks, or a solid-colored outfit where the earrings can be the star.
Danglers
Danglers is a catch-all for earrings that hang and move. They can be long and linear, layered, tiered, or have a single drop. If it dangles and it isn't a jhumka or chandbali, it's probably a dangler.
Wear it with: anything where you want movement. Danglers are great with an updo or a high neckline.
Studs
Simple, close to the ear, and no movement. But Indian studs are rarely boring. Think kundan florals, polki-style centers, temple motifs, or a tiny peacock in ruby red.
Wear it with: work, errands, dates, and anytime you want a little sparkle without the weight.
Hoops and balis
Indian hoops (balis) often come with charms, pearls, or textured silver. They're the bridge between your everyday and your festive jewelry.
Ear cuffs and sahara
A sahara (or kaan chain) is a little chain that connects a heavy earring to your hair, taking weight off your earlobe. It's practical and gorgeous. Ear cuffs hug the edge of your ear without a piercing.
So which one is right for you?
- Want everyday and easy? Small studs or mini jhumkas.
- Going to a wedding? Chandbalis or statement jhumkas.
- Want something modern? Linear danglers or charm hoops.
- Can't decide? A two-tone jhumka works with silver and gold outfits.
A note on weight
Big earrings can be heavy, and pretty isn't worth a sore earlobe at hour four of a sangeet. Look for lightweight sterling silver pieces, and if you're wearing something heavy, try a sahara or a support patch behind the lobe.
